Descendants of James Preston Newton (compiled by ANNe TIndall)

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES PRESTON6 NEWTON (JAMES R.5, GILES4, YOUNGER3, YOUNGER2, GILES1) was born 06 June 1884 in Newtonville, Marlboro, SC, and died 15 February 1970 in Dundee Nursing Home, Bennettsville, Marlboro County, SC. He married BLANCHE BRIGHT ADAMS 15 September 1907 in Baptist Parsonage, McColl, Marlboro County, SC,, daughter of SHOCKLEY ADAMS and ANNIE GIBSON. She was born 09 May 1889 in Adamsville, Marlboro, SC, and died 12 April 1964 in Marlboro Hospital, Bennettsville, Marlboro County, SC.

Notes for JAMES PRESTON NEWTON:
Personal History: Written in the hand of Blanche Adams (Newton) on a typed copy of an article noted as appearing in the "Marlboro Advocate" are the words "Married September 15, 1907. The article is as follows: "The old saying that "true love is not afraid of locksmiths, bars and distance", is certainly true. Shockley P. Adams and his good wife of the Boykin section had made all the necessary preparation for sending their lovely daughter Miss Blanche, to Littleton Female College, and she was to have left last Tuesday morning. Her trunk had been packed, dresses all made, some of the friends told good bye, but she and her lover, James Newton, were planning different. They had no idea of being separated for nine months, so on Sunday afternoon, under the pretense of taking a farewell buggy drive, when the sweet tales of love could be rehearsed, and each could tell the other of their undying affection, and the more firmly pledge their vows of attachment. But they rapidly drove to McColl, visited the Baptist parsonage, and in the presence of a few, hastily collected friends they were made husband and wife, and spent the night at Thos. Newton's, the groom's brother-in-law. The Advocate wishes them a long, prosperous and happy life."
Personal by granddaughter (Anita) Anne Gibson Tindall: "Granddaddy" was a BIG MAN. He was about six feet five inches tall and when he stood beside "Grandma", who was around five feet tall, they looked like "Mutt and Jeff". I remember sitting on the front porch in the swing with Granddaddy, not talking much, just swinging in the breeze. I also remember that he had horses and cows and kept them in with an electrical fence. He seemed to love holding onto the fence and then asking one of the grandchildren to "come here and hold my hand" when we would get a jolt of electricity running from the fence through his body. I didn't like that very much. I do remember how much I liked to go and spend a week or so with Granddaddy and Grandma. The house was large, they had reared nine children, and cool even on the hottest days. There always seemed to be a breeze drifting from across the field into the house. They had a well and Granddaddy would "draw a bucket of water" as needed and we would get a drink from the bucket with the dipper. They had an electrical stove, that I think some of their children encouraged them to get, but I think Grandma used the old wood stove for cooking and the new-fangled stove to store food, like left over biscuits.
Notes for BLANCHE BRIGHT ADAMS:
Blanche's eldest granddaughter, Anne Gibson (Tindall) who is compiling this family history, feels the necessity of entering a few words concerning her feelings about "Grandma". First she and "Granddaddy" looked like "Mutt and Jeff" when standing side by side. Grandma was around five feet tall and granddaddy was around six feet five inches. Grandma had the sweetest smile and you just knew that no matter what you did she would love you. She was never critical. I loved spending a week or so with them in the summer time. She had an old victrola that fascinated me and thanks to their son, James, I now have that victrola. I remember visiting Grandma and Granddaddy every Sunday afternoon and sneaking into the kitchen to find the left-over biscuits from dinner. One time I decided to get some milk from the refrigerator and saw a glass full. I almost got sick from the first and only swallow as it was Granddaddy's BUTTERMILK GLASS!!! They had no indoor bathroom so at night you used "slop jars" (actually they were more like buckets) and in the day-time you had to make your way to the back of their lot to the "out-house". This really was located in a neat area because it was near a fig tree where June Bugs lived. We would catch them and tie strings around their legs and let them fly as we watched. Also there were quite a few lightening bugs around this fig tree and they were fascinating as you made your late evening trip to the out-house. But the outhouse was scary. I was always afraid I would fall into the hole and even more afraid there might be a snake or spider that would crawl up to my bare behind. In those days visiting grandparents meant you would get to see your cousins and what fun we would have. All ages, sizes would gather and because Grandma and Granddaddy had nine living children, the group was large, especially when cousins from Virginia would visit. Among my many memories is the time several of us grandchildren discovered Grandma's secret. Always, after meals, Grandma would go into the little "pantry" off the kitchen and stay quite a while. I thought she was utilizing the "slop jar" particularly since you could smell smoke like a piece of paper had been burned (as was the custom when the slop jar was used for the more odorous personal elimination). However, one summer day when the cousins from Virginia were visiting and the eldest grandson, Johnny Paul, had his driver's license; Grandma sent us (I believe it was Mary Bright, Gigi, Danny Bruce and I with Johnny Paul) to Gibson (NC) to pick up something she had ordered from Pate's store. Naturally we curious teenagers HAD TO LOOK into this neat little package that seemed so important. When we looked we found PIPE TOBACCO....Grandma smoked a corn-cob pipe! Well, we thought this was just great that our Grandma smoked. It was, however, probably the very thing that brought on the cancer of the gum which spread to other body parts and ended her sweet life. I still miss her as she was the type of person you wanted to be like when you grew up.

6. BLANCHE LUCILLE7 NEWTON (JAMES PRESTON6, JAMES R.5, GILES4, YOUNGER3, YOUNGER2, GILES1) was born 09 July 1918 in Newtonville, Marlboro County, SC, and died 05 February 1996 in Carolinas Medical Hospital, Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC, She married WILLIE HARRIS GIBSON, JR. 14 November 1937 in Dillon, Dillon County, SC, son of WILLIE GIBSON and JOSEPHINE LILES. He was born 25 June 1916 in Gibson, Scotland County, NC, and died 08 November 1991 at home in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC.
Notes for BLANCHE LUCILLE NEWTON:
Lucille was a kind, intelligent woman who had experienced much sickness from her early years. She had osteomylitis, a disease of the bone marrow, when she was only four years old. She and her parents traveled many times from their home in Marlboro County SC to Charlotte NC where Lucille had many surgeries. Charlotte was about 100 miles from where they lived so I'm sure that in the early 1920's it must have taken the better part of a day to travel. Lucille said that her Aunt Ruth (her mother's sister) and husband, Uncle Manly, lived in Charlotte and they stayed with them. During this period in medical practice there were no antibiotics. I guess this to be true because Lucille said they used maggots to eat out the infection in her bones. She had scars on both legs and arms. These scars were actually the bone with a thin covering of skin. Even until her death at the age of 78 these areas were very sensitive to the touch.
Lucille was very sensitive person who loved all and basked in any little or big thing that showed she was loved by others. Her love for husband Willie was total and complete until the day she died. For several years before she and Willie married she kept a diary and a scrapbook with items in it from times they had spent together. On every page of her diary was a reference to her love for Willie, except one page when she was upset because Willie had not been to see her when she was expecting him. She also kept, what appears to be, every card she and Willie exchanged and cards received from others.
Lucille also was deeply committed to God. Before her health deteriorated she was very active in Purcell United Methodist Church in Charlotte. She taught Sunday School, helped with Bible School, lead a missionary circle. She was one of the last great communicators by mail. She loved to write letters and receive them. She always sent cards and notes to those who were sick or shut in. Lucille and Willie believed in tithing, giving ten percent to the Lord. They were very particular about who they gave that ten percent to. Lucille contributed $7 to $10 per month to several charities that helped children and the poor. When her house in Charlotte was sold she divided up the ten percent and send contributions to Purcell United Methodist Church, Boykin United Methodist Church (where she grew up) and St. John United Methodist Church (where Willie attended before his family moved to the Gibson UM Church). She may have given some to Laurel Hill United Methodist Church where she was attending prior to her death.
Lucille said, after Willie's death, that when she dreamed of him he was always turning away from her and leaving. Several days prior to her death she told that she had dreamed of Willie and he embraced her.
Notes for WILLIE HARRIS GIBSON, JR.:
Copy of Death Certificate in possession of daughter, Anne Gibson (Tindall) who, with others of Willie's family members: son and daughter-in-law, Willie P. and Judith Angus Gibson; son-in-law Carl O. Tindall; granddaughter Jennifer E. Tindall (Caviness); wife, Lucille Newton (Gibson) and Hospice Nurse Jessica Broome, were at his bedside when he died.
Willie was loved by all who knew him...adults, children and animals. He was the type of person who accepted and loved you as you were. He might not agree with you about certain lifestyles you might adopt---but you always knew he loved you anyway. He was a dedicated family man, a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather. During the last six months of his life as the cancer was eating away at his frail body he would insist that his entire family present at meal times sit at the small round dining room table together. Sometimes there would be ten to twelve of us there, but he squeezed us all up to the table. Before his death he told his daughter Anne that when he died the rest of the family was just losing one member but he was losing his whole family. He also loved his God and his church, Purcell United Methodist in Charlotte. On his deathbed with family members surrounding him, he said "Thank you sweet Jesus for letting me live in this beautiful world of yours". Willie met every day with a song in his heart and joy at seeing the beauty of nature. He loved his vegetable garden and he had a green thumb with plants and flowers. He helped so many people..many not known about until he died and stories of how he helped someone came to light. He visited shut-ins once a week for years prior to being incapacitated with the cancer that killed him. He mowed the grass of the widows in his neighborhood and fixed things around their houses when necessary. He maintained the grounds at Purcell Church and was the person called upon when anything needed fixing. He was a jack of all trades - cars, repairs around the house, lawn mowers, he loved to tinker with anything mechanical . He LOVED TO FISH! In the beginning of their marriage wife Lucille was a "fishing widow". In the latter years of his life he chose one day, Tuesday, as his weekly fishing day. He could catch fish when no one else was getting a nibble. Willie was also very superstitious and dreamed dreams that came true. If a black cat crossed his path, walking or riding in a car, he would turn around and go another way.
Children of BLANCHE NEWTON and WILLIE GIBSON are:

22. ii. WILLIE PRESTON GIBSON, b. 04 June 1943, Laurinburg, Scotland County, NC.

7. SUSAN MARGARET7 NEWTON (JAMES PRESTON6, JAMES R.5, GILES4, YOUNGER3, YOUNGER2, GILES1) was born 07 March 1920 in Marlboro County, SC, and died 05 April 2009 in At home, Gibson, Scotland County, NC. She married AUSTIN COLUMBUS GIBSON 24 February 1943 in Bennettsville Marlboro County South Carolina, son of WILLIAM GIBSON and MINNIE PARKER. He was born 01 September 1918 in Scotland County, NC, and died 09 March 1997 in Scotland County, NC.
Margaret’s eulogy:
Margaret first asked me to deliver her eulogy in 1997. I nervously agreed. Why was I nervous? Because Margaret was very precise about how she wanted anything to be.....her clothes, her hair, her house, her yard, her family. She had strong opinions and expected all of us to adhere to them. About three weeks before her death she asked me to go ahead and write her eulogy so she could read it! Of course I convinced her that I couldn’t do it then but that didn’t help my nervousness. I know that she will be listening to this so I’ve asked other family members to share memories of Margaret that I will use. That way maybe she won’t just be mad at me if it doesn’t suit her. And Margaret, just know, I’m doing the best that I can.
Margaret grew up on a farm. She was number 8 of 12 children, three of whom died in infancy. This was a time when homes were heated by fireplaces and the wood stove in the kitchen. It was a hard life, there was not much money but the one thing Margaret and her siblings had was love.
Margaret married a farmer. She helped in the fields, helped feed the livestock and the field hands, kept the books for the farm, killed hogs and had many ups and downs in the marriage, but she always had love in her heart and showed it in her life and the way she treated others. Nephew Gary says the greatest memory (he has) of Margaret was her love. He says he always felt loved when he was around her and will always cherish the time spent with Margaret, Jimmy and Austin and remembers those times like it was yesterday.
Margaret was a strong-willed, determined woman. She had three different kinds of cancer and beat them all. When she was in her 80’s she fell and broke her pelvis, but was up and running in 4 months from that. She loved for family to visit, but when she knew they were coming, the spent days cleaning what to me was an already spotlessly clean house. One summer several years ago she painted the back porch in 100 degree temperature because family was coming. The reason she always said I was like a mama to her is because I kept telling her she didn’t need to do all of that because family was coming to see her, not her house and most of us were coming from houses not quite as spotless as hers. But she still did her thing.
Nephew Vernon (whom we call Butch) says “Aunt Margaret’s house has always been open to family, and I think everyone just felt at home with Margaret. Her deep faith and love of God also made a great impression on me and my life. To me Margaret became the “glue” for the family after Grandma Newton passed away, and we were all thankful for that part of her life. Margaret’s life was very tough, with many bumps and humps, but she came out of those times not beaten, but as a stronger person. Her love of her yard, flowers, goats, and family. stands out in my mind. And the best part? If I called at least an hour or two before dropping by for even a very short visit, I knew I stood a 95% chance of have a wonderful lemon pie sitting on the table.
Grand niece Tracy says that Margaret was so elegant, beautiful, warm, sincere and witty and she will always remember her with so much love. Niece Helen Anne recalls that Margaret was so kind and caring yet such a strong woman who was so much like grandma. Helen Anne also remembers how her mom, Margaret’s sister Irene, and Margaret loved to talk about clothes and be such smart dressers....and Margaret had shoes to match every outfit she had. I’m sure Louise Ellis and her sister Kathleen can relate to this because the three of them traveled all over this part of the country shopping. Oh, how Margaret loved to shop. I’m sure that if there is a huge shopping mall in heaven, Margaret will find it! And all of that shopping showed in the elegant way that Margaret dressed. And she certainly didn’t mind mentioning to the rest of us how we might make improvements in our appearance! Niece Gigi recalls last August when Margaret was getting ready to go to the Newton Reunion and making last minute adjustments to her clothes and fiddling with her hair. Gigi commented on how pretty Margaret looked. Margaret’s reply was that she believed God meant for us to look as pretty as we can. Gig says that was so Margaret...Leave it to her to be looking the best she could and doing the Lord’s work at the same time.
Margaret did love the Lord and her church, this church, was very important to her as were the people in it. One of your members had expressed many times his fondness for Margaret and one day when Margaret and her daughter-in-law Karen were in the produce department of Walmart they saw him. Karen said to him that Jimmy was looking for a new step father who had a good running lawn mower and would he propose to Margaret right then and there. So in the banana section of Walmart he asked Margaret would she marry him and Margaret just looked at him and said No, I’m not interested in getting another man in my life. Margaret would do anything for her family, but marriage was not one of them. So Jimmy is still stuck with a not so good lawn mower.
Margaret was quite a jokester also. And her jokes were always directed at her family because she knew they would not take them seriously. For instance, several days before she became bed ridden, she told Jimmy and Karen that she had saved up some money that she wanted to take to Heaven with her and asked them to go get it. Well, of course, they asked why in the world she wanted to take money with her to Heaven. She very dryly answered, Because I want buy Jimmy a ticket so when he gets there they’ll let him in. We have all enjoyed this last one of her jokes immensely. For any who are concerned that Margaret thought Jimmy might not get to Heaven through God’s grace, rest assured she had already told him several weeks before that she knew she had nothing to worry about when it came to him. She knew that Jimmy believes in God and His Son, Jesus and sees Them and Their Work in the fields, animals and all of Nature. Margaret knew that Jimmy prays throughout the day and that he is a good man. She was very proud of, and loved very much, her boys.....Jimmy and J. J.
Margaret has left us with many fun memories. Sitting in her kitchen or gathered in her yard laughing, sharing memories of years past. One of my memories revolves around her love of cooking. When I am expecting 10 or so people for a meal, I probably cook too much, but my bowls look like they could feed 10 or more people. Eating at Margaret’s always reminded me of the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes. She would have small bowls of food that I would look at and think this cannot be enough for all of us. But we would all be full and there would be food left over. Amazing!!
Margaret’s joy of life and living are evident in grand niece Mychel’s memory of Margaret grabbing her in the hallway and dancing with her as some stuffed animal, maybe a reindeer, played the song “Shout”. As niece Debi says Aunt Margaret was always younger than I was and she was always cool! No matter her age, she was always cool!.
Margaret’s youngest niece, Lisa, recalls when she visited playing out in the yard with J.J. and running full force down the hallway and out the back door. Lisa and some of the younger nieces and nephews don’t have the memories that us older ones have of being at Grandma and Grandpa Newtons so Margaret’s home became the place where those kinds of memories were made for them, And that was what Margaret wanted to happen at her home. Lisa recalls Margaret in the kitchen cooking, baking, and laughing and remembers how the house always smelled good. Lisa remembers that her mom, Margaret’s sister Lanie, was always at her happiest at Margaret’s. When Lanie visited she and Margaret would tear up the roads going to see places, family, and friends known over the years. Margaret and Lanie would put on their “I look cute” hats and just roam around the yard, looking cute.
During Margaret’s last days the words heard most often were “I Love You”. These words were spoken to Margaret by family and friends and they were spoken to each other as hugs were exchanged when coming into the house or leaving. Margaret showed her love in many ways, but one of the most important was how she made her house and its surroundings reminiscent of the good old days, those days when family and friends dropped by and felt the warmth and friendship that brought back the sweet memories from our childhoods of long ago. Margaret’s legacy is not money or property; her legacy is the love she had for family and friends. And I know she expects us to carry on with that love and we will. At one point in her illness Margaret whispered to her daughter-in-law Karen, “You remember me”. So this part of the eulogy is for Margaret whom I know is listening.
Margaret,
You will be remembered when the flowers bloom in spring
And in the summertime remembered in the fun that summer brings.
You will be remembered when fall brings leaves of gold
In the wintertime, remembered, in the stories that are told.
And you will be remembered each day right from the start
For the memories that we once shared forever live within our hearts.
So we say to Margaret, We Love You, now “Go Rest High on That Mountain, Your work on earth is done”.
